Tips To Design Your Own Signs

Any business owner knows that name and logo recognition can make or break a business. People are more likely to buy from companies and businesses that they recognize, and a custom made sign can certainly help. A sign grabs people's attention whether they are driving, walking, watching TV or searching online. Having custom designed signs that are recognizable will attract business and drive a company to success and longevity.

Choosing whether to use a custom sign company or to make your own signs is a decision that business owners will have to decide on. There are benefits and drawbacks to both, but either one will require a design to work from. Short of hiring an advertising agency or other outside help, the design will have to come from the business itself. Some simple things to consider when designing a sign are what should stick in people's minds, and how to best reflect the services and products the business offers.

Try for something eye-catching - something that will make people stop and actually read the name on the sign and snag their attention. Depending on the kind of sign the business desires, this could be achieved with the use of neon lights, colors, fonts, pictures or even movement. It is possible to have too much of a good thing though, so make sure that the sign is not so eye-catching that people will focus on the design rather than the business, and to avoid turning anyone off with the sign as it may be too distracting or busy or unprofessional, potentially losing customers.

A good sign should reflect the business it represents. While kittens are certainly cute, they do not really belong on the sign for an electronics store. Try to come up with traditional, easily recognizable idea of the business and then customize it. For example, a bakery might use a pie or cake and then put a unique twist by showing a special design or illustrating the cake in an unusual setting. The design should be traditional enough that anyone who looks at it will understand the goods and services offered by the business, but also unique enough to not be mistaken with a competitor.

Once a design for the custom sign has been decided upon, colors, fonts and other details need to be addressed. While the logo is an extremely important part of the sign, make sure to include basic information, such as locations and contact information and any special services offered. This information should be easy to read, but not so dominating that it dwarfs the logo or any images. It is also advisable to have a few variations on the sign; one to hang above the store and attract business, one for business cards, another for commercials or print ads and so forth.
